CREATE GOALS AND SHARE THEM

STEP 1: Identify what you want

The best way to make change is to identify and set the goal you are working towards. If your end goal is clear then you can remain focused and give yourself the best chance to make change. Make your goal SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-based. Some people like to set goals based on units of alcohol or calories consumed. A very popular goal with our DrinkCoach app users is setting alcohol-free days.

STEP 2: Forward plan

Visualise your week ahead. Are there any days or times that you are going to struggle with, such as a meal out with colleagues or a stressful time?

Don’t just firefight – set goals for these particularly difficult situations.

STEP 3: Write it down

By recording your goal – writing it in a journal, sticking a post it note on your fridge, or recording it in an app you are making a firm pledge to yourself. It also serves to remind you so make sure you record it somewhere that works for you, where you will see it each day.

STEP 4: Tell someone

Take that next step in firming up your plan by sharing your goal and intention with a loved one or friend. Who knows, you may just inspire someone close to you to make a change too!

Sometimes it can be helpful to talk through your goal and plan with someone outside of friends and family. Our DrinkCoach online coaching clients regularly say that reviewing their goals with their coach makes them feel more accountable.

STEP 5: Review

Track and record your progress, you can do this via our free app, and see what is working and make any adjustments if necessary. Once you have reached your goal see if you want to challenge yourself further and start the process again.
